The next day, Jenna told Susan her mother was coming over, giving Susan the afternoon off. It hadn’t been a total lie. Her mother did plan to stop by that evening.

Baby Doll barked alerting her someone was at the door. Jenna straightened the table, throwing magazines into a rack.

When the doorbell rang, she peeked out and saw a man dressed in a nice shirt and slacks. She slowly opened the door.

“Ms. Myers, I’m Joel Massey.” He handed her his card.

“Thanks for coming. I was in a car accident. Maybe you read about it in the paper.”

The middle-aged man with a thick head of dark hair with silver strands blended in, stocky build, and tall entered her living room. “You must be talking about the one on Highway 50.”

“That’s the one.”

“I’m glad you survived.” He entered the room, his eyes scanning it. When Baby Doll growled, he extended his hand for her to sniff before petting her.

“Please have a seat.”

First, she asked questions about his business. He seemed comfortable answering. He had retired from the St. Louis County Police Department and had worked as a private investigator for six years.

“When the police questioned me about my wreck, I truly didn’t remember it. But later I did. After serious consideration, I decided not to tell them what really happened. Not yet, that is.”

“Tell me about it.”

Jenna studied the man. “I hesitate to say anything because once before I didn’t have enough proof about someone, and I ended up appearing like a lunatic. I don’t want to scream wolf until I know who it is. No doubt someone who is hiding in sheep’s clothing.”

Mr. Massey laughed. “I understand. Part of my being a good PI is discretion.”

She reviewed the details of the wreck, the threatening note, and about Laura’s accident. “I want to know more about it. A man who lived nearby witnessed it. See if you can find out what he has to say.”

“All right. And I’d also like to examine your car.”

“It’s smoked metal.”

He flashed a confident grin. “You’d be surprised what I can find.”

He flipped to the next page of his notebook. “Do you have any idea who’s behind this?”

“Yes, I think so. But I’m afraid if I’m wrong I could destroy someone’s life. I’d rather be sure.”

“Then let’s do it this way. You list six people, including your suspect, and I’ll check on all six.”

Jenna agreed. She listed the first six names that came to her, placing Mallory in the middle. “Done.”

Mr. Massey read the list of names. “I’m not sure how long it will take. We haven’t discussed my fee. “I’m not cheap.”

“And I’m not poor. Do you prefer the money now or later?”

“A retainer fee of five hundred now and the rest later. Now let’s decide the best way to protect you.”

He did an overview of every aspect of her safety. After discussing the security system she needed for her house and garage, he recommended she purchase a gun and take the needed training to obtain a gun permit.
